About the grant program
We offer travel grants to Kitchener youth (18 years old or younger) who:
- are involved in non-profit minor sports or cultural activities
- have qualified to compete in sport championships or cultural events
These grants are intended to help with the cost of travel to and from the event location only, where round trip travel is further than 500 kilometres.
Grant amount
The maximum grant amount depends on the distance of the event from Kitchener and whether the applicant is an individual or group. Find amounts of each situation below.
In all situations, teams are eligible for a maximum of $1,000.
Event in Ontario
- individuals: maximum of $50
- teams: maximum of $40 per member
Event outside Ontario, but in Canada
- individuals: maximum of $100
- teams: maximum of $90 per member
Event outside Canada
- individuals: maximum of $200
- teams: maximum of $175 per member
Application
If you or your group is eligible, use our online application form to apply for this grant. We process grants as we receive them.
We will let you know our decision whether we approve or deny it. If we deny the grant, you will be able to appeal the decision.
Within 30 days of the event finishing, you will send staff a copy of the official results of the event.
Eligibility
Our eligibility requirements depend on the type of event and applicant. Find details for minor sports and cultural activities below.
Minor sports
- Individuals or team members applying must be 18 years of age or under.
- Individuals and team members applying must be residents of the City of Kitchener.
- Grants will only be provided to non-profit minor sports teams that have a constitution and an executive elected by the membership in place.
- The event must be a recognized provincial, national or international championship, sanctioned by a provincial, national or international governing body. Individuals or teams must have qualified to compete in provincial, national or international championships.
- Teams applying for assistance must be based in the City of Kitchener. Kitchener-Waterloo teams may be considered on a pro-rated basis, considering Kitchener residents on the team.
- Individuals or team members participating for an educational institution (school team) are not eligible to apply.
- Grants will be available only where round-trip travel to a competition exceeds 500 kilometres.
- An individual or team member will be eligible for one grant per calendar year.
- Individuals or team members applying must be 18 years of age or under.
- Individuals and team members applying must be residents of the City of Kitchener.
- Individuals or non-profit teams involved in cultural activities (e.g. choir, dance) are eligible to apply. Individuals or teams must have achieved a level or standard of skill, as established by the recognized governing body of the activity, to qualify to participate in the event for which a travel grant is requested.
