About the redevelopment
We haven't decided where the new centre will be located. We believe it would be beneficial to look for partnerships that would see the centre redeveloped in its current location or a location near the current site. Through an open, transparent and competitive bidding process, we will be looking for a development partner interested in working with us.
Council endorsement
City council endorsed a staff report on April 29, 2024, with direction to move ahead with redeveloping Rockway Centre.
Community engagement results
In Fall 2024, the City collected feedback from 721 residents through a variety of in-person events, site visits and an online survey. The purpose of engagement was to gather input from older adults across the City to better understand the type of atmosphere, site features, and programs and services they would like to see in a new older adult centre.
Residents told us the top features they would like to see in a new older adult center are:
- A café or coffee shop
- Fitness room
- Outdoor features
- Other important site features included onsite parking, a pickup/drop off zone, accessibility features (e.g., washrooms, handrails).
Next steps
The next phase of this project is to develop the mandatory criteria for the Request for Proposal seeking a development partner for a new older adult centre. The criteria for the Request for Proposal will be presented to Council in 2025. Once approved, the City will initiate the Request for Proposal process to seek a development partner to build a mixed-use facility that includes an older adult centre.
