Mayor Berry Vrbanovic served as Ward 2 city councillor for two decades before you elected him as your mayor in 2014. He is the highest ranking elected official for Kitchener, with one vote on council and the responsibility to officially represent the council.
In addition to providing leadership to the rest of council and our city, the mayor acts as our official representative within several other organizations, including:
- Ontario Big City Mayors
- the Federation of Canadian Municipalities - Big City Mayors' Caucus (BCMC)
- Waterloo regional council
- non-municipal boards and committees
By serving as a member of these groups, the mayor is helping to address important issues at the local, provincial and federal levels. To learn more about some of these issues, please review our municipal advocacy information, and check out the mayor's inaugural address and State of the City address.

Inaugural address
Each new term of Kitchener city council begins with the inaugural council meeting, when our newly elected officials are sworn in and officially begin representing their constituents for the next four years.
The mayor provides an inaugural address to set the tone for the term, outlining both challenges and opportunities council and the city will address together. Read the transcript from Mayor Berry Vrbanovic's address, delivered Dec. 3, 2018.
