On behalf of City Council, I want to congratulate MPP-elect Aislinn Clancy on her successful campaign in yesterday’s provincial by-election in Kitchener Centre. Since being first elected in October 2022 as a City Councillor, it has been a privilege serving with Aislinn for the past year on City Council. As a first-time elected official, Aislinn quickly demonstrated her commitment to serving the residents she represents and her passions about climate change, affordable housing and social services carried into her provincial campaign. I thank Aislinn for her service to the City of Kitchener and look forward to working with her in her new provincial capacity.
I would also like to congratulate and thank all the candidates who put their names forward in the by-election, their campaign volunteers and all Kitchener Centre residents who voted in last night’s by-election. Never has it been more important to ensure we are all engaged with the other orders of government in ensuring they address the critical issues important to City of Kitchener residents today.
Under the Municipal Act, a City Councillor voted into provincial office is required to resign their Council seat upon publishing of the results in the Ontario Gazette or sooner. The vacant seat can be filled in several ways, including through a by-election or by appointment. The City Clerk will bring a report to Council at our next meeting following any resignation to declare the office vacant and Council will discuss next steps in January 2024.
