As City splash pads gradually reopen, the City of Kitchener is excited to announce the opening of a new splash pad at Doon Pioneer Park Community Centre. The new and improved splash pad is set to open Friday, July 17 just in time for the summer season.

“We’re early into the summer season and it has been a hot one so far, so I’m excited to announce that the brand-new splash pad at Doon Pioneer Park opens this Friday,” explained Ward 4 Councillor Christine Michaud. “The Doon Pioneer Park splash pad adds to the growing list of options available for families to cool off this summer.”

The new Doon Pioneer Park splash pad is home to a new spray tunnel, two o-shaped water tunnels as well as ground-level features such as a misty mountain and an arched water stream feature. In the evening, the new splash pad also has LED lighting to highlight the soaring spiral design.

The opening of the new Doon Pioneer Park splash pad adds to the growing list of splash pads now open across the city. City splash pads located at Breithaupt Park, Chandler Mowat Community Centre, Victoria Park, McLennan Park, Centreville Chicopee, and Kingsdale are also all open with physical distancing measures and modified access.

Splash pads are operating at a reduced capacity from 11:15 a.m. to 6:45 p.m., seven days a week except for during inclement weather. During busy periods, usage will be limited to 15 minutes to ensure access for as many users as possible. Splash pads are monitored by City staff to ensure compliance with provincial and Public Health guidelines related to physical distancing however children must be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times. Washrooms are available at the Victoria Park, Breithaupt, Kingsdale, and McLennan Park locations.

“As we continue to gradually reopen city facilities and amenities, it’s more important than ever that we keep ourselves and others safe by following necessary guidelines and posted signage, washing our hands and wearing a non-medical mask when required,” said Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. “Summer 2020 is here, let’s enjoy it but remember to stay safe.”

Due to high demand, visitors should anticipate wait times and plan accordingly by bringing water, snacks, and activities to make the most of their time while waiting.
