The City of Kitchener has declared a significant weather event due to the ongoing weather system. As there may be more snow on roads and sidewalks, we ask residents to limit unnecessary travel and to use extra caution when travelling or outdoors.
The City of Kitchener has launched the Missing Middle and Affordable Housing Community Improvement Plan, which will remove financial barriers and accelerate diverse, affordable housing options. This major new initiative is possible in part through funding from the federal Housing Accelerator Fund.
The City of Kitchener has approved two housing development applications that were deferred on January 5, enabling these applications to proceed through the use of a holding provision. A holding provision is a legal mechanism in the Planning Act that allows local government to enable development to proceed by placing a temporary restriction on that development until specific conditions set by the municipality are met. The two applications were deferred while CIty staff waited for the release of the Region of Waterloo’s detailed report of its current water supply capacity issue.

Work has begun on Route 2, which will connect Stanley Park, Downtown Kitchener and Uptown Waterloo. Based on community feedback, the route has been extended to include the Spurline Trail between Downtown and Uptown. Major destinations along the proposed route include the Dom Cardillo Trail, Stanley Park Mall and GRT Station, Centre in the Square, Kitchener GO/VIA Station and the Spurline Trail.

As part of the Community Safety and Wellbeing Plan (CSWP), and together with the Region of Waterloo and community partners, the Combating Hate Action Table has developed the We All Belong Here anti-hate campaign. This region-wide initiative, represented by the artwork of Indigenous designer Katie Wilhelm, aims to reduce hate and shape a city where everyone feels welcomed, respected, and celebrated for who they are.
The City of Kitchener is urging residents to take precautions to reduce the risk of flooding on their properties as a major snow melt approaches. While City staff are actively working to safeguard areas most vulnerable to flooding, homeowners can also take several steps to protect their properties.

The City of Kitchener is cancelling the current snow event effective 4 p.m. on Friday, January 2, 2026. The street parking ban will be lifted once the snow event is cancelled.
