Today, as Canadians, we celebrate the 159th birthday of this great country we call home. No matter where you are celebrating today, I invite you to do so together with family and friends, knowing we live in the best country in the world.

This month, Council supported housing, growth management, and community planning by approving the Fire Station 8 Housing Development, advancing a new Water Allocation Policy, adopting the Kitchener 2051 Official Plan and Dundee Secondary Plan, and celebrating national recognition for excellence in financial reporting. 

On June 29, 2026, City Council approved measures that will improve future winter maintenance and pothole response across Kitchener.

Earlier today, the City of Kitchener celebrated the grand opening of the new Williamsburg Community Centre, a vibrant hub designed to bring people together, foster connection and support healthy, active living. Located at 200 Rosenberg Way, this modern multi-use facility replaces the original community centre on Fischer Hallman and offers a full range of recreational and fitness programs in this larger space.

The Grand River Recreation Complex, including Lyle Hallman Pool, will be closed for repair and maintenance all day, this Saturday, June 27. 

Canada Day is Wednesday, July 1 and there are lots of activities to enjoy across the city. Some City of Kitchener facilities and programs may be impacted by the holiday, so review the facility hours as you plan your celebration. 

The City of Kitchener is reminding residents to keep safety in mind this Canada Day and exercise caution with private fireworks displays. The City's Fireworks and Firecrackers Bylaw was updated in 2025, so residents are asked to re-familiarize themselves with the rules and regulations for fireworks in advance of the holiday.  

The City of Kitchener has been made aware of individuals reaching out to local businesses falsely claiming to be City employees.

In this scam, fraudsters contact small business owners via email, claiming to represent the City's Special Events team, offering "exclusive" vendor opportunities for the Christkindl Market. The email uses specific details about the event and links to legitimate City webpages to dupe the recipient into sending money. City of Kitchener staff have contacted Waterloo Region Police Services (WRPS) to alert them to this scam and to prevent community members from being taken advantage of.

The City of Kitchener has once again been recognized for excellence in financial reporting, receiving the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting for its 2024 annual financial report from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).
