Kitchener's newest active transportation route connects neighbourhoods
The City of Kitchener is rolling closer to achieving its strategic goal of Building a Connected City.
Route 1, Kitchener’s first of eight active transportation routes connecting neighbourhoods to major destinations, transit and commercial areas was designed as part of the 2020 Cycling and Trails Master Plan. The plan aims to create a connected active transportation system within the city.
Each route has a name, colour, and number—like a transit system. Creating recognizable signage and visual markers for each route was important for the project’s success. These elements improve recognition, navigation, and awareness of active transportation options for residents. They also reassure those using the route that a safe and well-maintained path lies ahead for them.
“We’re taking the success of our award-winning trails and bike routes one step further,” shared Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. “By adding clear, intuitive wayfinding signs and route navigation, residents and visitors alike will have new ways to explore our city, all while helping us achieve our vision of an accessible, sustainable and inclusive Kitchener for everyone.” shared Mayor Berry Vrbanovic.
To celebrate the launch of Route 1, a grand opening ceremony was held on Sunday June 7, at 1 p.m. in Filsinger Park. Following remarks, community members were invited to walk, roll or ride on the route alongside the Mayor and City Councillors.
“These priority routes come with a promise of simple navigation, connected trails, safe crossings and year-round maintenance,” shared Ward 6 Councillor Paul Singh, who serves on the Active Transportation & Trails Advisory Committee.
Even more opportunities for community members to try out Route 1 and come together to experience Kitchener’s trail system will be offered throughout the summer months, including:
