National Volunteer Week, April 19 – 25, celebrates the everyday ways that people across the city selflessly give of their time, skills and energy to strengthen our community, support neighbours, and help build inclusive communities through shared action. 

It’s a sure sign of spring when the golf courses open for the season. Kitchener Golf’s ground crews have been busy preparing for several weeks, and the City of Kitchener is excited to announce that Rockway and Doon Valley Golf Courses will open next Friday, April 24 (weather permitting). 

The City of Kitchener, in collaboration with the Waterloo Region Small Business Centre (WRSBC), hosts a free monthly speaker series called SDG Talks. The series explores the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and how we can create a more socially and environmentally sustainable planet. This year’s theme, Purpose and Profit, focuses on helping businesses embed sustainability into their core operations and strengthen their bottom line while creating meaningful community impact.   

New volunteer opportunities have been posted for our Community Threads - Learn to Sew program. Applications are due by Friday, May 15, 2026.

The City of Kitchener has launched two new volunteer opportunities for residents interested in parks, forestry and natural spaces. Open to youth and adults living in Kitchener, these positions will give participants hands-on opportunities to learn about, and contribute to, Kitchener’s parks and natural spaces. 

FIFA proudly unveils the route for Canada Celebrates the FIFA World Cup 2026™, a first-of-its kind programme that will unite communities across the tournament co-host country and carry the energy, pride and passion that are synonymous with the world’s biggest sporting event beyond the Host Cities of Toronto and Vancouver.

Canada Celebrates will bring football fans together for live match viewings, football-themed activations, cultural programming, music, food, and moments of national pride. It will run throughout the tournament from 11 June to 19 July, with pre-tournament stops on 1 June and 5 June respectively, along with supporting stops for the FIFA World Cup™ Trophy Tour by Coca-Cola. With the support of the Government of Canada, municipalities and other partners, Canada Celebrates has stops spanning from coast to coast to coast and covering all provinces and one territory, from Whitehorse and Halifax to Kamloops and Niagara Falls. The programme will bring FIFA World Cup energy to 38 stops across 34 communities within a two-hour drive of more than 75% of Canadian residents.

In Kitchener, any change that affects the portion of land between your property line and the road requires approval. That includes widening the paved area, altering the boulevard, or modifying the curb. Even if you’re only expanding up to the sidewalk, it still counts as work on City property, which means a permit is required. 

This month, the City of Kitchener joins individuals and organizations across the globe to celebrate Earth Day. Taking place on April 22, Earth Day 2026 explores the theme “our power, our planet” and how the daily actions of communities, educators, workers, and families move environmental progress forward.
