About 44 Gaukel
In 2019 we began piloting an affordable artists’ studios project at 44 Gaukel Street in downtown Kitchener. The facility hosts dozens of local arts organizations and artist entrepreneurs that work in many disciplines, including performing arts, music production, writing, design and a range of visual arts. Hundreds of creators have honed their practices inside 44 Gaukel, which has supported the growth of amazing local luminaries like Morningstar and Luke Swinson, Good Company Productions, Artshine and My Pet Skeleton, among many others.
Available spaces
Studios range in size from less than 100 square feet to more than 700 square feet, with rents based on square footage. Waterloo Region-based arts workers or organizations can check out our current (or soon to be) available spaces and book a tour below, with an option to be invited to join the 44 Gaukel waitlist after visiting. Please note that we cannot accommodate people working in other sectors and we only offer licences for 3-, 6-, 9- or 12-month terms. No shorter-term rentals are available.
Project background
44 Gaukel has been developed in response to ongoing interest in accessible artist resources, shared during consultations with citizens dating back decades. Following a successful five-year pilot period, the project emerged from the pandemic fully occupied and brimming with energy. The creation of a pedestrianized Gaukel Block added to that exciting vibe, and the services, workshops, markets and experiences made by 44G residents keeps it humming.
