About the project
The Beasting's Last Bits
44 Gaukel’s incredible and exquisite corpse-making project has taken many forms since it began just before the pandemic. Blind collaborations with limited time and materials by 95 artists of all stripes, styles, skills, ages, backgrounds and pressure tolerances have unleashed 96 original artworks, hundreds of videos, oodles of improvisation and a super cool booklet.
To mark 100 contributions/contributors to The Beasting, we are making one final round of conjoined artworks on a huge scale. We are inviting digital artists to apply to create one of six sections of two gigantic three-part beasts. They will be printed in vinyl and installed on 5x10 foot panels on the Gaukel Block-facing exterior walls of 44 Gaukel in downtown Kitchener.
Timeline, criteria and compensation
Visual artists with active practices and the ability to use a digital drawing program can apply by completing the online form. Applicants must:
- Live and/or work in Waterloo Region or have an established connection to the area
- Be a Canadian citizen or legally entitled to work in Canada
- Be willing to sign a temporary artwork agreement with the City of Kitchener to produce this project
- Complete a full application expressing interest before June 15, 2026
- Commit to creating their artwork during a limited timeframe, within a series of creative limitations, in collaboration with other artists whose work they won’t see
- Commit to creating and licencing a time-lapse video of their art being made
- Agree to post-production polishing adjustments, mostly for artwork continuity
- Commit to being part of a live question and answer session on Gaukel Block on Sunday, September 27, 2026
Participating artists will be selected by a jury of project directors and advisory committee volunteers. Selected artists will be paid $1,000 to participate after signing a contract and completing their contributions.
Artworks must be produced during a specified time in July 2026 and final digital files must be provided by mid-August 2026. Both combo beasts will be installed and unveiled on Friday, September 18 to help kick off Kitchener’s hub city celebrations for Ontario Culture Days, with more festivities planned involving all six artists on September 27.
