Noise complaints and exemptions

Our noise bylaw is in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Please limit excessive noise and be considerate of your neighbours.

Noise bylaw

Our noise bylaw is in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The bylaw limits excessive noise, including:

  • yelling
  • loud music, radio or TV
  • other unusual noise

City council may grant events exemption from our noise bylaws. Noise exemptions last until 11 p.m. Check the list of approved noise exemptions.

Construction noise

Construction noise is allowed between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. seven days a week.


Noise complaints

To make a noise complaint, call the Waterloo Regional Police Services non-emergency line at 519-570-9777.


Apply for a noise exemption

Apply for an exemption if you’re hosting a small private event like a barbecue, wedding or other party that might have excessive noise. Please allow for seven to 10 days for processing. Based on council policy, we can approve noise exemptions until 11 p.m.

For public events selling alcohol or large scale events, please send us an email to apply for a noise exemption through the director of bylaw enforcement.

Regional Sewer and Watermain Ltd., for their underground utility work as part of Broadview Ave Recon between the hours 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM starting September 15 till October 3, 2025

The City of Kitchener and their contractor, Wash Worx, to complete the power washing of sidewalks from April 28 to October 3, 2025 between the hours of 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. based on the following tentative schedule:

  • April 28 to May 16
    King Street (Francis St to Cedar St), City Hall/Carl Zehr Square, Moloks/Dumpster Bins (Goudies Ln, Lot 9, Market Ln), approx. 20 downtown patios - Weather Dependent

  • June 23 to July 11
    King Street (Francis St to Frederick St), City Hall/Carl Zehr Square, Moloks/Dumpster Bins (Goudies Ln, Lot 9, Market Ln) – Must be completed before July 11

  • July 22 to August 22
  • King Street (Francis St to Frederick St), City Hall/Carl Zehr Square, Moloks/Dumpster Bins (Goudies Ln, Lot 9, Market Ln) – Must be completed before August 22

  • September 22 to October 3
  • King Street (Francis St to Frederick St), City Hall/Carl Zehr Square, Moloks/Dumpster Bins (Goudies Ln, Lot 9, Market Ln) – Must be completed before October 3

A noise exemption has been granted to Avertex to relocate utilities and install new conduit on Duke Street West between Wellington Street North and Victoria Street North. The exemption is in effect 24 hours a day from October 15 to October 18, 2025.
