Recruitment process

Join Team Kitchener

Our recruitment process is designed to be transparent, fair and supportive. Whether you’re applying for your first job or bringing years of experience, here’s what you can expect.

1. Browse open job opportunities

  • Filter by area of interest or skills
  • Review the job posting requirements 
  • Sign-up for job alerts to be notified of new opportunities

2. Online application

  • Upload a copy of your resume, cover letter (optional), and any additional documentation
  • Supported extension formats include doc., docx., pdf. 
  • If you are a City of Kitchener employee, please apply internally on K-Hub

3. Screening process

  • The hiring team will review all applications and determine which applicants best meet the job qualifications
  • We will only contact those candidates who will be moving onto next steps 

4. Interview(s) and/or testing

  • Selected candidates will be contacted by a member of the hiring team to set-up an interview and testing (if applicable)
  • The interview will consist of a series of questions related to the position 
  • If applicable, the testing component will evaluate your job-related skills 
  • If you require accommodation, please review our accommodation process 
  • All candidates that have been moved forward in the recruitment process will be contacted no matter the outcome 

5. Provide references (if applicable)

  • The candidate(s) most suitable for the position will be asked to provide professional references
  • If you don’t have any professional references, provide other persons who can speak to your professional character 

6. Offer letter

  • The candidate most suitable for the position will receive an offer letter with all employment details
  • Submit a signed offer letter and complete required onboarding forms 

7. Onboarding

  • The candidate may be asked to complete pre-employment requirements including:
    • Driver’s abstract
    • Vulnerable or criminal police check
    • Professional designation certificate
    • First aid
  • Complete employment training through our learning management system

Recruitment policies

Please note that as per Human Resources Policy HUM-HIR-110, "Employment of Relatives of Staff Members and Elected Officials":

"The immediate relatives of staff of the Human Resources Division, all Directors, General Managers, or the Chief Administrative Officer and Elected Officials shall not be employed by the City in any capacity.

The immediate relatives of all other Management personnel shall not be employed where such employment would be:

  1. within the same Department in the case of permanent full-time, temporary full-time and part-time classifications.
  2. within the same Division in the case of students."
