Use these tips to identify City of Kitchener building staff

We received two recent reports of individuals falsely claiming to be building inspectors with the City of Kitchener.

In most cases, City inspectors will visit a location because a customer with an active building permit has called to request an inspection. However, there are occasions when staff may come to a site unannounced to investigate a complaint.

To confirm that you’re speaking with a City of Kitchener building inspector, look for:

  • The City’s logo and brand colours (green and gold) on the sides and rear of their City vehicle
  • City of Kitchener logo(s) on their clothing, as well as appropriate safety gear (e.g., hard hat, safety boots)
  • City of Kitchener ID badge and/ or business cards, shown on request

In most cases the City inspector will knock on the front or side door before walking into the backyard of an occupied building. Kitchener employees only conduct inspections between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays.

You can call us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 519-741-2345 to confirm if a City of Kitchener employee has visited your home or construction site.
