Updates to carbon monoxide alarm requirements coming January 1
Starting January 1, 2026, updates to the Ontario Fire Code take effect, expanding requirements for carbon monoxide (CO) alarms in homes.
CO alarms must be installed on every storey or floor of a home that has:
-
a fuel-burning appliance (like a furnace, water heater, or stove that uses natural gas, propane, oil, or wood)
-
a fireplace
-
an attached garage
-
NEW: air for heating that comes from a fuel-burning appliance not contained within the home (e.g., an appliance in a utility shed)
If your home meets any of the conditions above, you must install a CO alarm in these two locations:
-
outside of each sleeping area
-
NEW: on every storey (floor) of your home
Over 65% of all carbon monoxide deaths and injuries in Ontario occur in homes. Protect your family and home by checking CO alarms regularly and replacing expired units.
