Updated statement from Mayor Vrbanovic on Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony
In recent days, many residents in Kitchener and throughout our region, have been saddened to learn of the difficult considerations faced over the last while by the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony (KWS) board, leading to the decision last Thursday to tender their resignations and file for bankruptcy.
The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony has been a key cultural institution and an integral part of our live music scene locally since 1945. In the decades that have passed, the KW Symphony eventually grew to become the third largest orchestra in Ontario, cultivating world-class talent and delighting audiences of all ages on a local, national and international stage.
The KW Symphony was also a founding partner, together with the KW Art Gallery and the Grand Philharmonic Choir in the opening of the Centre in the Square back in 1981. Without their support and advocacy, the Centre in the Square, one of the best performing arts centres in the country, may never have been built.
With the news that the KW Symphony has filed for bankruptcy and the board of directors has resigned, the City of Kitchener, together with many community partners is reflecting on the legacy of the organization in our community and its impact on Kitchener, Waterloo Region and beyond.
As one of the largest employers of performing artists and cultural workers in Kitchener and throughout our area communities, the dissolution of the KW Symphony will have a significant impact on many individuals, both locally and beyond our borders. We know this is a difficult time for many in our community and our thoughts are with the musicians, musical director, cultural workers, youth orchestra members, staff, volunteers, donors and fans.
Live music has long been an important part of Kitchener’s cultural scene, and today and in the days ahead we are thankful for and reflect on the beautiful legacy of music and world-class talent the KW Symphony has given to our community.
Classical music and live music of all genres will continue to be of importance to residents throughout our community. We are confident that in the weeks and months ahead, this will lead to new conversations in our community about how to best support these musical genres and also to ensure that the performing arts facilities within Kitchener serve the broad range of diversity and cultural tastes that exist in a thriving, vibrant community like we have in Kitchener and throughout Waterloo Region.
