Tools and tips for the season’s first snowfall

Kitchener, ON– With the first snow forecast for this weekend, it’s time to remind ourselves of the support and tools available in our community to help us all have a safe and healthy winter season.

As the snow starts to fall, you can expect to see City of Kitchener plows on the streets. The City monitors snow and ice accumulation and clears snow and ice from roads and sidewalks around City-owned facilities, walkways, and parks.

Residents and property owners are responsible for clearing sidewalks around their properties within 24 hours of the end of a snowfall. Anyone requiring extra help to clear the snow around their property can visit Kitchener.ca/Snow for information on organizations that offer snow clearing assistance.

To make sure City plows have access to maintain streets, keep parked cars off roads, especially overnight. The City’s winter overnight parking bylaw goes into effect December 1; however, it’s important to keep roads clear to make sure our plow operators can do their work. More information about winter parking is available at Kitchener.ca/ParkingBylaws

Remember to use caution when travelling during a snowfall; it will help keep everyone safe. Be aware of the road conditions and forecast before leaving, and consider staying home if possible when the weather is bad. The City’s snow plow priorities map shows the order in which roads are cleared to help you plan your trip.

Above all, connecting with your community and keeping an eye out for one another will help ensure everyone has a happy and healthy season. Be aware of those around you and if you see a neighbour struggling, offer help if you can.

As we prepare for the first snowfall, visit Kitchener.ca/Snow for more information and the tools available to help you plan for a safe season.
