Statement on '1 Million March 4 Children’ September 19, 2024

At the City of Kitchener, we have a commitment to build a city for everyone where, together, we take care of the world around us and each other. We believe all residents have the right to live in safety, be true to themselves and live free of harassment and hate.

In the lead-up to the ‘1 Million March 4 Children’ events planned in cities across Canada on September 20, I am reminding our community that we must be vigilant to denounce any hate speech or targeting of marginalized groups.

While the City recognizes people’s Charter-protected right to organize and protest in public spaces, Kitchener City Council stands by our 2SLGBTQIA+ community members, especially youth who may be strongly impacted by these demonstrations. No member of our community should ever feel targeted because of their gender identity or sexual orientation, race, religion, nationality, age or background.

While the City cannot prevent a gathering in a public space, our security and by-law teams as well as the Waterloo Region Police Service will be present during the demonstrations and counter-protests to ensure safety for all.

As part of our work in fostering a caring city together, Kitchener supports the diversity of our residents and employees through inclusive programming, grants, and gender-inclusive and welcoming facilities and customer service. We also embed equity into our work and culture through equity-focused policies and training. We are committed to building a more inclusive and equitable city where all members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community feel valued, respected and welcome.

To residents, staff, City Hall tenants and visitors who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+, we support you and you are always welcome in Kitchener.

Mayor Berry Vrbanovic, on behalf of Kitchener Council
