Statement from Mayor Berry Vrbanovic – Pride Month

The month of June is a celebration of the history, contributions and diversity of the Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex, queer and questioning communities (2SLGBTQIA+).

The City of Kitchener is committed to building a city for everyone - a city where, together, we support and uplift one another. As we celebrate Pride Month, we reaffirm our dedication to fostering a more inclusive, equitable, and welcoming community where all 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals feel valued and respected.

Today, we proudly raised the Progress Pride flag at City Hall to mark the beginning of Pride Month. It is a powerful symbol of our ongoing commitment to inclusion and supporting members of all identities. Designed by artist Daniel Quasar, the flag integrates the original multi-coloured rainbow flag rainbow design with colours representing trans and non-binary individuals, Black and Brown community members, and those impacted by HIV/AIDS. The chevron symbolizes forward movement, reminding us of the progress we continue to strive toward.

Each one of us plays a role in shaping and creating a world that everyone can live in, both authentically and without fear. I encourage you to reflect on what equitable and inclusive actions you can take, both personally and professionally, to help build a community where everyone belongs.

There are so many great events and activities happening across Kitchener and Waterloo Region to learn and celebrate Pride. Please visit OurSpectrum.com and community calendars for details.

Happy Pride Month!
