Mayor Berry Vrbanovic’s statement on Canada Day 2025

Today, Canada Day, is a time when we gather as a country to celebrate the birth of our great nation and the place we all proudly call home today. It invites us to reflect on our beginnings and cherish the shared values that unite us, the accomplishments that shape our identity, and renew our commitment to building an inclusive future where everyone feels a true sense of belonging.

As we come together with loved ones – on porches, in parks, and across neighbourhoods – to celebrate, let us remember the history that has shaped our country. From coast to coast to coast, Canada is a mosaic of different cultures, languages, and traditions. This rich diversity is our strength and the heart of our shared identity.

A critical aspect of being Canadian is understanding the histories and realities of Indigenous Peoples, who have lived and cared for this land for thousands of years. The knowledge, cultures, and continued presence of Indigenous Peoples remain central to the history and future of the lands on which our communities are built. As we mark this day, let us continue our efforts by engaging with reconciliation initiatives in our community, supporting Indigenous-led initiatives, and uplifting Indigenous artists, businesses, and organizations.

For many of us as Canadians, Canada Day is also a day when we recognize the hard work and resilience of our community as we jointly navigated a variety of challenges in the world around us. Where we come together to help each other not just during difficult times but every day through little acts of kindness. The neighbour who checks in on a senior, the volunteer who gives their time without recognition, the countless ways we support each other every day – that is the heart of Kitchener and the soul of this country. Your dedication to your community, especially during challenging times, is the true Canadian spirit.

Today, we’re thrilled to gather at Kitchener City Hall for a day full of joy, music, and connections. This year’s celebration is bigger and better – with the debut of the Canada Play kids’ zone, a citizenship court, performances by incredible Canadian talent like Juno Award-winning Sloan, and a spectacular pyrotechnics finale that will light up the sky and our hearts.

On this Canada Day, let us celebrate everything we have achieved together and reaffirm our work to make Canada, a place we all call home, even better. Let us think about what each one of us could do to support building a more caring, welcoming and nurturing community and country for all of us and for our future generations! Happy Canada Day! Bonne Fête du Canada!
