Local artwork showcased in Downtown Kitchener with new Canvas in the Sky initiative

Kitchener, ON – This winter, the streets of downtown Kitchener will transform into an open-air art gallery. Launched Monday afternoon, the City of Kitchener’s new Canvas in the Sky initiative will showcase the work of local artists on a series of banners that will be installed on light poles throughout the downtown core.

“Downtown Kitchener has a distinctive energy that makes it unique, special, and instantly recognizable to all who know and love it,” said Mayor Berry Vrbanovic at the launch event Monday afternoon. "The chosen designs embody the downtown vision and guiding principles. They speak to the connection that people have to our downtown while celebrating its vibrancy and liveliness. We’re thrilled to be showcasing the talent and creativity of some of our local artists with this new initiative and can’t wait to share it with our whole community!”

Canvas in the Sky features two sets of six banners, each displaying seasonal artwork that speaks to the feeling of the seasons in Kitchener. The first set, featuring winter-themed artwork, will be installed in early December. The second set will be installed in the spring and will display artwork reminiscent of spring, summer and fall in the city.

All the artwork was selected through a public procurement process and evaluated by a jury. The artists whose work will be displayed are:

  • Cornelia LeRoux

  • Donia Liu Neekman

  • Dottie Chiu
