Kitchener students invited to share their vision for My Ideal City

Kitchener, ON — The Office of the Mayor and Council, City of Kitchener, is inviting students aged 10 to 12 to take part in My Ideal City, an annual civic engagement program that gives young people an opportunity to learn how municipal government works, and to have their voices heard.

Through My Ideal City, students are asked to imagine the kinds of programs and services they would like to see in their community. Participants will submit a 250-word written essay outlining their ideas, and selected students will be invited to take part in a mock council debate held in Kitchener’s Council Chambers on May 25, 2026.

The live, televised event allows students to step into the role of elected officials, practice respectful debate, and experience how decisions are made at the municipal level. And while doing so, they build confidence, critical‑thinking skills, and an understanding of civic leadership.

“This program is about helping young people take their passion for the city they live in, share their vision and see that as young people, their ideas matter to City leaders,” said Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. “My Ideal City gives students a meaningful introduction to local democracy and encourages them to think about how they can help shape the community they live in.”

Students whose essays are selected will be paired with city staff, the mayor and members of council to help prepare for the debate. The winning submissions will also be featured in an upcoming edition of the Kitchener Citizen.

Essay submissions are now open, and families, teachers, and schools are encouraged to support students in participating. For more information, visit the City’s website.
