Kitchener recognized as a “most inspiring” Climate Smart Utility by International Water Association
The City of Kitchener’s work in preparing for the impacts of climate change has been recognized as “most inspiring” by the Climate Smart Utilities Recognition Programme, presented at the International Water Association's World Water Congress & Exhibition.
“This is an incredible accomplishment, thanks to the expertise of the staff team and the vision and support of council,” said Bu Lam, City of Kitchener Director of Sanitary and Stormwater Utilities. “I am overjoyed to see our staff recognized for their commitment to both our residents and their efforts to implement climate change adaptation measures.”
The City of Kitchener was recognized for its work implementing a stormwater management strategy that
features multiple initiatives aimed at helping the city adapt to the impacts of a changing climate. Most impactful has been Kitchener’s approach of rehabilitating and naturalizing concrete-lined creeks to build resiliency against flooding. This creek naturalization program exemplifies a forward-thinking approach to climate adaptation.
“Stewardship of our public water supply is one of the most sacred trusts we hold as a municipal government,” said Denise McGoldrick, General Manager of Infrastructure Services at the City of Kitchener. “As climate change and a growing population challenge us to innovate how we manage our utilities, I’m happy to see that not only are we rising to meet these challenges – we’re being celebrated by our peers for our innovation.”
With urgent action needed on mitigation and adaptation, the International Water Association is calling on utilities around the world, regardless of their size or location, to endorse a shared vision to build momentum for greater progress. The IWA Climate Smart Utilities Initiative has been launched to support all utilities worldwide to act collectively and share knowledge. The City of Kitchener was acknowledged as ‘Most Inspiring’ by a jury of experts through the Climate Smart Utilities Recognition Programme. This distinction is awarded to utilities with particularly ambitious achievements.
Climate Smart Utilities are water, sanitation, and urban drainage service providers that are improving their climate resilience by adapting to a changing climate while contributing to a significant and sustainable reduction of carbon emissions.
