Kitchener honoured as Age-Friendly Community by the Province of Ontario

The Ontario Government has officially recognized the City of Kitchener as an Age-Friendly Community, celebrating the City's commitment to providing accessible and vibrant supports that improve the wellbeing of older adult residents.

The award was presented at the Age-Friendly Community Recognition Ceremony, coinciding with the 2026 Rural Ontario Municipalities Association (ROMA) conference in Toronto. Mayor Berry Vrbanovic, Bethany Pearce, Supervisor of Older Adult Services and Carolyn Cormier, Older Adult Engagement and Special Projects Coordinator were in attendance to accept the award on behalf of the City.

“We are deeply proud to receive Ontario’s Age-Friendly Community designation. This recognition reflects the City of Kitchener’s commitment to ensuring all residents can thrive, no matter their age,” shared Mayor Berry Vrbanovic.  "We look forward to building on this achievement, and are committed to creating active, engaging and vibrant community building opportunities where every participant feels welcome and supported.”

In 2017, the City of Kitchener implemented its Age Friendly Kitchener Action Plan, focused on accessible and affordable neighbourhoods, access to information, belonging, and connectedness and wellbeing.

To support this ongoing vision, the City offers a wide range of wellness, active living, learning, and social‑connection programs for older adults, including fitness classes, arts and technology courses, social groups, and supportive services. All programs are designed to help seniors stay healthy and engaged with their community.
