Kitchener Fire Department Launches Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1)

Kitchener, ON - The Kitchener Fire Department (KFD) is excited to announce its implementation of Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1). This modernized version of the traditional 9-1-1 network is enhanced by digital technology, providing critical improvements.

Kitchener Fire is among the first fire Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) in Ontario to implement NG9-1-1 technology, which offers:

  • more reliable and accurate caller location and phone number information

  • enhanced cybersecurity

  • expanded backup redundancy in the event of a system failure

  • future ability to support advancement in digital technologies

“Next Generation 9-1-1 is more than a technology upgrade—it is a transformation of how we connect with those who need us most,” said Fire Chief Robert Gilmore. “For more than three decades, our Emergency Communications Centre has served this community well, but NG9-1-1 will ensure we are ready for the next generation of challenges, with faster, smarter and more resilient service.”

Kitchener Fire Department’s Dispatch Emergency Community Centre receives phone calls and provides dispatch services for the fire departments of Kitchener, Cambridge, Waterloo, Woolwich, Wilmot, Wellesley, North Dumfries and Stratford.

“Kitchener is proud to be at the forefront of public safety innovation. The launch of Next Generation 9-1-1 by our Fire Department marks a transformative step forward in how we serve and protect Kitchener and the 7 other communities we serve,” said Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. “Thanks to the Provincial government, this investment ensures that our residents and businesses have access to faster, more reliable emergency response when they need it most.”

The Ontario government has provided more than $650,000 since 2022 to support the Kitchener Fire Department’s transition to NG9-1-1.

"Upgrading Ontario’s public safety communications will be a game changer,” said Hon. Michael Kerzner, Solicitor General of Ontario. “Next Generation 9-1-1 gives first responders real-time, life-saving information which means a faster, more effective emergency response. Under the leadership of Premier Ford, our government will always have the backs of those who protect our province. That’s why we are proud to provide funding to Kitchener for this new technology which will mean more calls will be answered, more lives will be saved and people across the city can count on emergency services when it matters most."
