Getting Around map helps Kitchener residents plan their routes during a snow event

Kitchener residents can now track the progress of snow-clearing operations using a new Getting Around map. This online map helps residents plan their route throughout the city during a city-declared snow event. The map will be available after a city-declared snow events.

When a snow event is declared and plows are deployed, the map will show when city roads were last serviced by a winter maintenance vehicle. Residents can use this map to plan their route by checking to see what roads have been cleared. The map will remain available for 24 hours after the cancelled snow event

Getting Around online map allows you to:

  • See what roads have been treated most recently by a winter maintenance vehicle during a snow event. A snow event is declared when there is significant snowfall of 8 cm or more in the forecast.
  • See a time range for when that road was last serviced by a winter maintenance vehicle in the last 1-24 hours.

During a city-declared snow event, the Getting Around online map shows the progress of winter snow-clearing operations in Kitchener. Crews prioritize snow efforts in three priority categories. Priority one routes are typically regional, and city arterial roads, priority two routes include GRT (Grand River Transit) bus routes, roads with steep hills and sharp curves, and priority three routes include local residential streets. Staff work through each priority route after all respective streets have been cleared. The city aims to complete all snowplowing within 24 hours after a snowfall.

The Getting Around online map highlights the city’s commitment to continuous improvement by showing residents exactly when snowplows are out and keeping Kitchener roads up to winter maintenance standards.
