Get ready to Play in the Park this summer
Summer is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy playing games, making crafts and having fun with friends in the fresh air and warm sunshine in Kitchener parks.
The City of Kitchener is introducing a free morning drop-in program this summer for children ages 4 to 12. Play in the Park will offer fun, loosely structured activities like outdoor games, sports, and crafts.
“We are proud to introduce this pilot program this summer,” said Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. “Play in the Park will offer organized outdoor activities that encourage a greater appreciation of nature, our parks and our environment. Some of the best childhood memories come from exploring the outdoors in the summer and discovering new things with friends.”
Play in the Park will be offered Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at three neighbourhood parks: Wilson Park (Kingsdale), Morgan Park (Centreville-Chicopee), and Gzowski Park (Victoria Hills). The program starts July 2 and runs through August 22 (no programming July 1 or August 4).
“Play in the Park is a fantastic initiative that encourages physical activity, social skills, and outdoor exploration,” said Councillor Jason Deneault, reflecting on how similar programs shaped his own childhood. “The program is especially valuable for families who were unable to secure a spot in summer camp.”
Children, youth and families are welcome to participate in the programming together. Staff-led programming will vary depending on attendance and weather, offering flexibility and fun in a safe environment. No pre-registration is required, but caregivers must sign-in on their child’s behalf upon arrival. Play in the Park staff do not replace parent or caregiver supervision.
