From Wi-Fi to AI: What’s next for Digital Kitchener?

The City of Kitchener is calling on the community to help shape the next chapter of its award-winning digital journey. As part of the Digital Kitchener strategy review, the City has launched a community survey to gather ideas, feedback and aspirations for how technology can better serve everyone in Kitchener.

Digital Kitchener strategy

The Digital Kitchener strategy was first approved by Council in 2017 and provides a guiding vision in the use of technology to improve city infrastructure and services. The plan aims to improve connectivity, encourage innovation and make digital tools more accessible. Since this multi-year plan launched, the City has been able to focus on leveraging technology to improve the lives of community members such as:

  • converting streetlights to LED, enabling the lights to dim or brighten based on how much light is needed, saving energy and money while cutting down greenhouse gas emissions

  • launching the Digital Kitchener Innovation Lab, allowing the City to test new ideas faster, support local post-secondary co-op programs and improve services more quickly

  • providing free Wi-Fi and the use of public computers and printers in City facilities, keeping community members connected with access to email, the internet and online services

Why this matters

The Digital Kitchener Strategy has helped the City use technology to improve services, boost connectivity and drive innovation. From free Wi-Fi to smart streetlights and digital inclusion programs, it’s already made a difference. Now, the City is updating the strategy to reflect today’s priorities and tomorrow’s opportunities.

“This review is about listening, learning and leading,” says Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. “We’re not just updating a strategy — we’re building a shared vision for how technology can improve lives in Kitchener. Your input will help us identify new opportunities, partnerships and innovations that reflect what matters most to our community.”

What’s new?
This review goes beyond updating a plan—it’s about co-creating a digital future with the community. The City is exploring how technologies like AI can improve service delivery, equity and efficiency, while aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Nicole Amaral, director of the Digital Kitchener Innovation Lab, says, “This is a pivotal moment for Kitchener. As we reimagine our digital future, we’re inviting the community to help shape a strategy that’s inclusive, forward-thinking and grounded in real needs.”
