Fire Prevention Week reminds us that working smoke alarms save lives

Fire Prevention Week (October 5 to 11) is an opportunity to share fire safety information and tips with residents about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe. This year, Kitchener Fire is teaming up with Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest to promote the message “Check your smoke alarms.”

Smoke alarms provide early warning and time to leave when there's a fire. A large portion of fire deaths in the home happen at night, while sleeping. You must have working smoke alarms on every level of your home and outside all sleeping areas. It is the law.

Kitchener Fire reminds residents to ensure their fire alarms are in good working order and offers this easy smoke alarm safety checklist:

  • test your smoke alarms monthly

  • if your smoke alarm has removable batteries, change them twice per year (daylight savings time)

  • gently vacuum your smoke alarm once a month with soft brush

  • replace smoke alarms when they exceed the recommended life cycle (usually 10 years)

  • replace an alarm earlier if it is not working correctly or damaged

Kitchener Fire will also be at KIDtoberfest this Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Kitchener City Hall with fire safety resources and fun giveaways as part of Fire Prevention Week.
