Fire Prevention Week offers reminder that working fire alarms save lives

Fire Prevention Week, October 6 to 12, 2024, is an opportunity to educate residents about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe. Kitchener Fire is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) to promote this year’s theme, “Smoke alarms: make them work for you!”.

Kitchener Fire urges all residents to ensure their fire alarms are in good working order and offers residents these safety tips:

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the home.
  • Make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or don’t respond when tested.
  • Change the batteries in your smoke alarm every spring and fall when you adjust your clocks for daylight savings time.

Visit Kitchener Fire at the Kitchener Rangers game on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. at The Aud to pick up some fire safety resources and ask questions at the Community Corner.
