Do your part to make this a safe back-to-school season

Tomorrow, schools across Kitchener will welcome new and returning students for a brand-new school year.With three new schools opening in Kitchener, we’re asking all residents to pay attention to and comply with new speed limits, no stopping zones and school bus loading zones in those neighbourhoods. Bylaw enforcement will be in effect.

Our new schools include:

  • St. Patrick Catholic Elementary School at 1201 River Road East

  • Willow River Public School at 670 Thomas Slee Drive

  • Holy Trinity Catholic Elementary School at 200 Rosenberg Way

We’re expanding our crossing guard coverage with three new locations:

  • Kinzie Avenue and River Road East;

  • Kinzie Avenue and Thaler Road;

  • River Road East and Fairway Road North;

All crossing guard location times have been updated to create more consistency and fairness across the city, as well as better accommodate the travel patterns of students. Visit the pedestrians and sidewalkswebpage for a full list of times and locations.

Caregivers can lead busy, hectic lives. By the time you make it to school drop-off, you’ve spent an hour or more wrangling your kids. You might be late for work, fatigued and stressed out.

Even still, it’s important to take your time - mistakes happen when we’re rushing or overwhelmed. Here are a few suggestions for making this a safe back-to-school season.

Let responsible kids walk
Many Kitchener neighbourhoods are connected with safe, walkable routes to school, making it the safest option for many. If your kids are old enough to get to school on their own, avoid the busy drop-off zone and encourage them to walk.

Slow down
Studies show that speeding during an average trip to a grocery store or school saves you less than a minute of time. That’s not worth a severe collision or someone’s life.

Leave space
Leaving a buffer of space between you and the next vehicle will give you more time to stop for the unexpected. Plus, you’ll have better lines of vision.

The City of Kitchener is committed to eliminating serious injuries and death due to traffic collisions in our community. Visit our Vision Zero page to find out more.
