City of Kitchener invites community to share local stories as they put a Spotlight on Sport at the Cowan Recreation Centre
The City of Kitchener is inviting residents to help put a spotlight on local sports by celebrating the people and organizations who make Kitchener a vibrant, active and connected community through a permanent community showcase in the Cowan Recreation Centre at RBJ Schlegel Park.
When the facility opens on November 14, visitors will discover Spotlight on Sport, a community storytelling space located in the main corridor beside the Cowan Fieldhouse. Featuring four large digital displays, photos, memorabilia, athlete and team profiles, and rotating community-submitted stories, Spotlight on Sport will celebrate the athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers, teams, organizations, and community champions who have helped shape sport and recreation in Kitchener. Through featured profiles and community submissions, the exhibit showcases achievements, inspires participation, and highlights the many ways sport helps communities connect.
"Sport is about much more than competition. It creates connections, builds confidence, brings people together in what often become lifelong friendships, and helps create a sense of belonging in our community," said Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. "Every day, athletes, coaches, volunteers, officials, and organizations across Kitchener make a positive difference in the lives of others, here in Kitchener and often beyond our community’s borders. The Spotlight on Sport at the Cowan Recreation Centre gives us an opportunity to celebrate their contributions, preserve their stories, and inspire future generations to get involved."
From grassroots programs and neighbourhood leagues to provincial, national, and international achievements, Spotlight on Sport will showcase the many ways sport strengthens our community and creates meaningful connections. The exhibit will celebrate not only athletic success, but also leadership, inclusion, mentorship, volunteerism, and community building. The inaugural exhibit will feature Kitchener-born soccer players, Leticia Skeete and Markus Cimermancic, as well as former professional volleyball player Sarah Pavan and national men’s wheelchair basketball veteran, Tyler Miller.
"Every community has inspiring sport stories that deserve to be told," said Mark McGinley, Manager, Cowan Recreation Centre. "Whether it's a volunteer who has dedicated decades to local programs, a team that brought a community together, or a young athlete who inspires others through their commitment and determination, Spotlight on Sport will help share and celebrate those stories."
