City of Kitchener expands interim Kitchener Market operations, supports vendor recovery
KITCHENER, ON – The City of Kitchener is taking another step forward in the recovery of the Kitchener Market, introducing temporary fee reductions for vendors and expanding interim operations beginning September 5.
Since the July 12 fire, the City has focused on supporting vendors while keeping the Market open for the community. The Market has not missed a Saturday, with more than 30 vendors serving thousands of customers every weekend.
Through investments in temporary infrastructure and services, the majority of market vendors will have the opportunity to operate in a modified format starting September 5, significantly expanding the products available to shoppers, including meat and dairy.
"The Kitchener Market has been bringing people together for more than 155 years. It’s an institution – we're committed to it and to supporting the vendors who are at the heart of it," said Andrew Sturgess, Director of Business Growth and Entrepreneurship. "We're excited to welcome back most vendors next month while we continue the important work required to fully restore the market."
The City operates the Kitchener Market as a community service, with the goal of covering operating costs through vendor rent and facility rental fees. Since July 18, vendor rent has been waived while recovery plans have been developed.
Through a staff report for the August 24 City Council meeting, Council is being asked to approve temporary fee reductions for vendors operating within the interim market model. Over the estimated six-month recovery period, the City expects to invest between $240,000 and $270,000 in vendor supports, temporary infrastructure, services and rent reductions to help businesses continue operating.
Remediation and restoration planning is continuing, with the City working in coordination with insurers, public health authorities and contractors.
In the meantime, residents are encouraged to continue supporting local businesses at the Kitchener Market every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and visit kitchenermarket.ca for more information.
