City of Kitchener begins expansion of Mill Courtland Community Centre

Kitchener, Ontario—The City of Kitchener officially broke ground at the Mill Courtland Community Centre earlier today, beginning a series of upgrades that will expand and enhance the centre's programs and services. Member of Parliament Tim Louis, Mayor Vrbanovic, Councilllors, community members, and city staff were on hand to kick off the project, which will continue through the end of 2026.

The expansion and upgrades to the Mill Courtland Community Centre will make it more accessible, provide additional room for programming, and offer a beautiful, modern environment for residents.

“Kitchener has a long history of building a network of community centres and this expansion of the Mill Courtland Community Centre is an ideal example of the community-building that the City of Kitchener is committed to,” said Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. “By partnering with the Government of Canada to promote economic growth and strengthen communities, we are upgrading the community infrastructure that our residents rely on.”

This project is funded in part by the Government of Canada through a $1-million contribution from the Canada Community-Building Fund.

“Investing in inclusive and accessible infrastructure is at the heart of building a stronger, more connected Canada,” said Tim Louis, Member of Parliament for Kitchener—Conestoga. “Through the Canada Community-Building Fund, we’re proud to support the City of Kitchener in expanding the Mill Courtland Community Centre—ensuring that residents of all ages and abilities have a welcoming space to gather, grow, and thrive.”

The expansion includes:

  • A new 2,755 sq.ft. single-story addition that will include a multi-purpose program room, recording studio, office, meeting room and storage areas

  • A new basketball court on the rear parking lot

  • An accessible walkway from the Mill Street municipal sidewalk to the main entrance

  • Upgraded accessible parking spaces and enhanced accessibility features at entrances

  • A storage building adjacent to the rear parking lot

  • New accessible asphalt walkways to site features at the rear

  • An accessible sloped walkway with railings and a switchback ramp from the Stirling Avenue municipal sidewalk to the addition’s rear entrance

  • New universal and accessible washrooms

  • Upgrades to interior finishes for a more modern and welcoming aesthetic

  • New roof and windows

  • HVAC, mechanical, fire and electrical upgrades

“I’m pleased with the long list of upgrades we’ll soon enjoy at the centre, but I’m especially happy to see that so many of the changes will make the centre more accessible,” said Ward 9 Councillor Debbie Chapman. “Our community centres are gathering spaces for the whole community, and it’s important to make sure we’re building spaces for everyone.”

Programs will continue to be provided by the Mill-Courtland Neighbourhood Association and Highland Stirling Community Group. The majority of programs will be provided out of the Rockway Mennonite Church on 47 Onward Avenue. Some programming will be provided at other local churches or schools in the neighbourhood.
