City of Kitchener completes tree and paver replacement project along King Street with support from FedDev Ontario

The City of Kitchener has completed its replacement of trees and pavers along a stretch of King St. in central downtown Kitchener, supported by an investment from the Government of Canada, through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario).

“This stretch of King Street is one of our busiest pedestrian corridors,” said Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. “This is another example of what can be achieved when different orders of government work together on behalf of Canadians, and I’d like to thank FedDev Ontario, Minister Tassi, and our area MPs for their support.”

The work undertaken along King Street replaced trees and improved the paved surface between the sidewalk and roadway. The first phase of the project took place in fall 2022 between Water and Ontario Streets. The second phase of the project, now completed, ran between College and Young Streets. The project included:

• Replacing trees, damaged pavers & concrete as well as aging irrigation & electrical equipment
• Improving performance of the planters and tree wells
• Improving management and better health of trees along King Street
• Improved installation and maintenance of horticulture displays in planters

The City of Kitchener received a non-repayable contribution of $499,000 from FedDev Ontario to complete this project.
