Athletic Awards showcase accomplishments of 125 local athletes and coaches

Kitchener, Ontario – This year, the City of Kitchener and our annual Kitchener Athletic Awards ceremony is proud to partner with Explore Waterloo Region’s Athlete of the Year and Outstanding Athletic Achievement awards, to jointly celebrate the accomplishments of our community’s finest athletes, teams and coaches The awards event will be held on Tuesday, March 24 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Bingemans in Kitchener. 

 

The annual Kitchener Athletic Awards recognize the achievements of local amateur athletes who have competed and placed first in a Canadian provincial or national championship or received gold, silver, or bronze in an international championship sanctioned by a recognized Canadian sport governing body.  

 

"In collaborating with Explore Waterloo Region this year to recognize local athletes, it is clear that our community continues to nurture exceptional athletic talent. Our athletes and coaches have demonstrated remarkable dedication, representing Kitchener proudly at provincial, national, and international levels. 

In the afterglow of the recent Winter Olympics, we can truly appreciate the commitment, determination and resilience demonstrated at all levels of competition throughout an athlete’s journey,” said Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. "We are incredibly proud of our local athletes and inspired by their achievements. We wish them continued success in their ongoing journey pursuing their respective sports.” 

 

This year’s Athletic Awards will honour individual athletes, teams, and their coaches that have competed in various sports including athletics, boxing, ball hockey, diving, gymnastics, lawn bowling, powerlifting, skating and taekwondo. 
 

Additionally, Explore Waterloo Region will present their Athlete of the Year and Outstanding Athletic Achievement awards.

"This partnership allows us to honour achievement at every level, from emerging amateur talent to outstanding athletic accomplishment, in one cohesive and collaborative event. We’re proud to be part of a celebration that reflects the incredible depth of sport in our community.” 

 

About David Edgar, Guest Speaker 

Kitchener native and past Waterloo Region Athlete of the Year nominee David Edgar is a former professional soccer player. His career spanned top clubs in England includingNewcastle United, where he made his senior debut in 2006 and famously scored against Manchester United in one of his first appearances. He later returned to North America to play in the MLS and finished his career in the Canadian Premier League. Now coaching locally, he shares his expertise through David Edgar Football Coaching, NXGN Canada, and Waterloo Minor Soccer.
