A new way to explore City parks and trails
The City of Kitchener is working to make City parks and trails imagery available through Google Street View. Google Street View is a technology by Google Maps that offers a virtual experience of various locations using three-dimensional panoramic images that are captured by Google and other contributors.
Throughout June until August, a City staff person will be riding around on a bright orange trike to capture 360-degree images of the City of Kitchener parks and trails. The public will be notified prior to filming with signage at entry and exit points. All personal or sensitive information captured will be blurred out such as faces and license plates.
After the images are collected, City staff will be making them available through Google Maps and using them to highlight and track parks and trails maintenance more efficiently. Residents will be able to explore parks and trails from home and can better prepare for upcoming trips.
Google Maps is currently available on the amenities module on the City’s website. Google Street View imagery will enhance navigation on City parks and trails and will be a resource for other initiatives. The images are expected to be available online throughout the summer as images become ready for publication.
