12 tips for staying safe this holiday season

The holiday season is a busy time of year that often sees us opening our space to family and friends, cooking a festive treat, and reaching for a space heater or firewood for some extra warmth on snowy days. These and other hallmarks of the season can also bring with them increased fire dangers if not handled correctly. Taking the right steps to prevent fire is just as important in our holiday preparations as readying the snow shovel or getting out winter hats and coats.

Today the Kitchener Fire Department is kicking off 12 Days of Holiday Fire Safety with some easy tips for how you can stay safe this holiday season as you count down the days until Christmas. Take a moment each day to think about fire safety, examine your space, and make sure you’re prepared for a safe and healthy holiday season!

  1. Water fresh trees daily and keep them away from heat sources
  2. Inspect all cords and lights before decorating
  3. Test smoke alarms
  4. Test carbon monoxide alarms
  5. Create or practice your home escape plan
  6. Use extension cords wisely and never put them under rugs
  7. Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from anything that could burn
  8. Blow out candles before you go out or go to sleep
  9. Safely store matches and lighters away from children
  10. Stay nearby when cooking and don’t get distracted!
  11. Smoke outside, use deep, solid ashtrays, and extinguish properly
  12. Drink responsibly and don’t cook or smoke while under the influence
