Tips for using fireworks safely and responsibly this Diwali
As residents prepare to celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights, the City of Kitchener is reminding everyone to prioritize safety and exercise caution when using fireworks during the holiday.
For those planning private fireworks displays, the City encourages residents to familiarize themselves with the Fireworks and Firecrackers Bylaw, which was updated in 2025.
To keep everyone safe and in compliance with City bylaws, please follow these rules when setting off fireworks:
-
You must be 18 years or older to set off fireworks.
-
Fireworks can only be set off on private property.
-
Fireworks are only permitted during approved dates and times.
-
Fireworks must be set off at least 10 meters away from any building or structure.
Failure to follow these rules may result in enforcement action or fines.
Setting off fireworks in public spaces, including parks, roadways, schoolyards and other public property, is not permitted.
Keep safety and your neighbours in mind
Residents choosing to use fireworks are encouraged to take the following precautions:
-
Follow all manufacturer instructions and safety guidelines.
-
Use fireworks only in permitted locations and maintain a safe distance from buildings, structures and spectators.
-
Keep water nearby in case of an emergency.
-
Never attempt to relight fireworks that have malfunctioned.
-
Be considerate of neighbours, pets and others who may be affected by loud noises.
The City continues to take a zero-tolerance approach to fireworks bylaw violations and works closely with Waterloo Regional Police to help protect public safety.
Setting off fireworks outside permitted areas or times could result in a minimum fine of $1,500.
