City of Kitchener wins national award for financial reporting
Kitchener, ON - The City of Kitchener has once again been recognized for excellence in financial reporting, receiving the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting for its 2024 annual financial report from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).
This marks the third consecutive year the City has received the award, which recognizes Canadian municipalities that go beyond the minimum requirements to produce clear, transparent and accessible financial reports for their residents.
“Kitchener residents expect us to be responsible, transparent and forward-looking with their hard-earned tax dollars,” said Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. “Receiving this award again reflects Council & staff’s continued commitment to strong financial accountability and to clearly communicating how we are investing in services, infrastructure and the long-term success of our community.”
The Canadian Award for Financial Reporting program was established to encourage municipal governments across Canada to publish high-quality financial reports and to provide peer recognition and supports to the staff that prepare them. To earn the award, a city must produce an annual financial report that is easy to read, well-organized and clearly communicates its financial position.
The City’s 2024 financial report highlights Kitchener’s ongoing focus on delivering value for residents, maintaining a strong financial foundation and making strategic investments that support a growing and evolving city.
“This recognition speaks to the diligence and expertise of our staff and to Council’s ongoing commitment to sound financial management,” said Ward 1 Councillor Scott Davey, Chair of the Finance & Corporate Services Committee. “Transparent financial reporting helps build trust with our community and ensures residents understand how their tax dollars are being used to support programs and services.”
The award will be presented to City staff at the June 29, 2026, Kitchener City Council meeting.
