City of Kitchener celebrates the grand opening of its newest community centre

Earlier today, the City of Kitchener celebrated the grand opening of the new Williamsburg Community Centre, a vibrant hub designed to bring people together, foster connection and support healthy, active living. Located at 200 Rosenberg Way, this modern multi-use facility replaces the original community centre on Fischer Hallman and offers a full range of recreational and fitness programs in this larger space.

The Williamsburg Community Centre is an important $8.1 million investment made by City Council in this growing southwest corner of Kitchener, providing meaningful services and opportunities for families in the growing Williamsburg and Rosenberg neighbourhoods. Today’s opening, celebrated on Canadian Multiculturalism Day, honours the people and neighbourhoods that make Kitchener and Canada wonderful, and marks an important milestone in creating a true central hub for the community.

“Today's opening of the new Williamsburg Community Centre is a celebration of the people that help make Kitchener a great place to live, work and thrive - reflecting City Council's commitment to building inclusive, accessible community spaces where residents of all ages can build community together,” said Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. “This centre, built in partnership with the Waterloo Catholic District School Board and the Williamsburg Community Association, will strengthen community, build belonging and help ensure that everyone who visits feels welcome, as they strive to build their best life possible.”

The new community centre features:

  • 17,000 square feet of space for recreation, wellness and connection
  • Two gymnasiums and four multi-purpose rooms in which to offer more than 150 weekly recreational and fitness programs
  • Fully accessible facility including an adult change table
  • Free public Wi-Fi and access to computers with printing capabilities, supporting digital equity in the Williamsburg community

The grand opening event kicked off with a performance by the 530 Havoc Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron Marching Band followed by remarks and the ceremonial ribbon cutting.  Attendees enjoyed live entertainment, magic shows, inflatables, outdoor games and more.

“This community centre represents an important investment in the well-being and connection of our community,” said Ward Councillor Jason Deneault on behalf of Ayo Owodunni, Ward 5 Councillor. “We're proud to create a welcoming space where people can come together, learn and thrive in meaningful ways.”

The project was made possible through a unique partnership with the Waterloo Catholic District School Board and demonstrates a shared commitment to strengthening community life in Kitchener. Williamsburg Community Centre is one of three community recreation facilities opening this year and is part of the City’s ongoing investment in community health and well-being.
