Premier Doug Ford and area government MPP’s were welcomed by Mayor Berry Vrbanovic and City Councillors today at Kitchener City Hall for a special announcement awarding Kitchener with $14 million for exceeding their 2023 housing target.

This contribution is part of the province’s Building Faster Fund and was awarded to Kitchener for achieving 139% of its housing target in 2023.

“The Building Faster Fund is another example of transformative funding that will help Kitchener enable more housing across the continuum,” said City of Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. “We are grateful for the provincial government’s contribution of $14 million to help get more housing built in our rapidly-growing community.”

In March 2023, City Council unanimously approved a housing pledge that will support the building of 35,000 additional homes in Kitchener by 2031. The pledge is a commitment to advance progress on various strategies and actions that will support building new homes. This pledge demonstrates our commitment to unlocking more housing, streamlining development approvals, removing barriers and accelerating planning in support of the province’s housing target.  Since March 2023, Kitchener Council has in fact already issued planning approvals for 36% of its housing pledge commitments, or 12,508 new housing units.

“I want to thank Premier Ford, Minister Calandra and the Government of Ontario for believing in our community since first highlighting Kitchener’s leadership in tackling the housing crisis on the day after the last municipal election,” said Mayor Vrbanovic. “Tackling this challenge will take an all of community approach with all orders of government and the private and not-for-profit sectors working together to ensure every Ontario resident, has both a roof over their head, and any supports they may need, in order to live a great life.”

The City of Kitchener stands ready to continue working with all orders of government to ensure that our community has the resources and infrastructure needed to enable housing and for a strong Kitchener and a stronger Ontario.
