Fireworks safety


When done safely, fireworks can be a great way to celebrate and are a popular tradition during holidays world-wide.

In the city of Kitchener, fireworks can only be set off on Victoria Day, Canada Day and Diwali, and the day immediately before and after these holidays. To set off fireworks outside of these days a permit is required. Check for events with public firework displays put on by certified technicians that are trained to handle them safely.

If you plan to host your own display, you can set off fireworks on your own property but they are not permitted on public property. 

Fireworks have the potential to cause serious injury and cannot be sold to anyone under the age of 18. Make sure responsible adults supervise.

Here are a few safety tips you should consider when setting off fireworks:

Fireworks may not be set off: 
  • On any city street or highway.
  • In any woodlot, public trail, or ballpark.
  • In any parkland under the jurisdiction of the City of Kitchener without first having obtained a permit to do so.
  • Within 25 feet of any building or structure.
  • In areas containing dead undergrowth or trees.
  • Firecrackers - which are different than fireworks and include items like cherry bombs and torpedoes - cannot be sold or set off anywhere in Kitchener.

When setting off fireworks: 

  • Use fireworks outdoors only;
  • Choose a clear, open area;
  • Check wind direction and speed;
  • Always have an adult present;
  • Have water handy;
  • Use eye protection and wear non-flammable clothing;
  • Read and follow label directions;
  • Keep spectators at least 20 metres from launch area;
  • Wait 30 minutes after display has ended and dispose of fireworks properly by soaking in water and then disposing in trash bin).


  • Experiment with homemade fireworks.
  • Give fireworks to small children.
  • Light more than one firework at a time, or relight ''duds.''
  • Throw or point fireworks at other people.
  • Carry fireworks in your pocket.
  • Shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers.
