SHARE support services

Older adults going through difficult times don't have to suffer alone. Our peer helpers are here to help.

Peer helpers are trained older-adult volunteers, who:

  • Provide one-to-one support for older adults going through tough times,
  • Offer information seminars on issues of interest to older adults, and
  • Facilitate support groups.

Our helpers complete a 30-hour training session, which focuses on communication skills and understanding the issues of aging.

Support groups

Peer helpers also facilitate the following support groups:

Caregiver support

The caregiver support group provides assistance and encouragement to primary caregivers. The group meets every five weeks at Rockway Centre to explore common difficulties and experiences in being a primary caregiver. Support is available from experienced facilitators, staff and community links.

New Beginnings grief-support group

New Beginnings is for widowed people 50 years of age and older, providing a caring support system to help deal with the painful reality of personal loss and the gradual return to the mainstream of life. Support is available from qualified staff and volunteers who have also coped with bereavement.
