Kitchener’s Huron community is rapidly growing. With a current population of 10,900, this thriving community is expected to grow to 29,300 residents once fully developed. The increased number of residents settling here creates a need for facilities and community spaces that provide valued amenities, programs, services.

To best meet the needs of this growing community, the City of Kitchener is partnering with the Waterloo Region District School Board, YMCA EarlyON to build a joint school and community centre at Tartan Avenue.

Council approved the development of the community centre in 2018. To make this facility work, the city traded a small piece of property with the Waterloo District School Board to ensure adequate space for this development and its amenities. Recommended amenities for the new centre include:

  • gymnasium
  • multipurpose room
  • mid-sized program room
  • storage for each room
  • office spaces for staff, neighbourhood association and possible partners
  • lobby area and amenities
