Kitchener – The City of Kitchener is encouraging residents to take steps to reduce the risk of flooding on their properties as we prepare for a significant snow melt. Snow has been accumulating without a substantial melt since mid-December, and while City of Kitchener staff are proactively working to protect the areas at greatest risk of flooding, there are many steps that residents can take to protect their homes.
This year’s snow accumulation is so significant that it might not be possible to take every precaution, but if possible, these steps will mitigate the risk of rapidly melting snow:
-
Remove snow directly around the foundation of your home. As the snow melts, watch for standing water around your foundation.
-
Clear the area around your downspouts – ideally they should have two meters of clear space for water to drain, preferably onto a lawn or garden area. Do not direct your downspouts onto adjacent or neighbouring properties, walkways or parks.
-
If you notice water seeping into your basement or around your windows, follow the steps recommended by the Government of Canada here. If you live in a basement apartment, let your landlord know.
-
If there’s dampness in your basement, use dehumidifiers to dry the affected areas if not severe. Seek professional help if you notice serious water damage.
-
If you have a sump pump, cycle it at least once a month and clean the sump basin annually.
-
As the snow melts, sweep dirt and debris from your driveway and sidewalk into the garbage instead of onto the road – doing so may obstruct catch basins during a melt.
City of Kitchener crews are uncovering blocked catch basins and continue to monitor roads for localized ponding as they clear blockages to alleviate ponding.
