Statement on Regional Government Review

Waterloo Region -The following statement has been issued on behalf of the Regional Chair and the mayors of Waterloo Region in response to the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing’s announcement of the online consultation on Regional Government.

Today, the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing announced the next phase of consultation in the Regional Government Review. The public will now have an opportunity to provide input directly to the provincial government through an online portal.

This review of regional governments has the potential to affect how municipal services are delivered in our communities. It is important that residents and businesses have the opportunity to provide input to the review process.

We have previously encouraged the provincial government to provide ample opportunities for broad input to the review process. We are encouraged to see that they are launching this next step in the process.

In addition to the online input opportunity launched today, we encourage the provincial government to provide additional opportunities for in-person input into the process.

We encourage everyone to take full advantage of these opportunities to provide input into the process.

We continue to encourage the provincial government to be clear about its desired outcomes and to allow communities to determine how best to achieve these desired outcomes – to reflect their unique circumstances.

The Regional Government Review was announced by the province on January 15, 2019 to review the governance, decision-making and service delivery functions of eight regional municipalities, including Waterloo Region.
