Photo of Queen Elizabeth II, In memoriam 1926-2022

Today, the residents of Kitchener, along with so many people across Canada and around the world, were profoundly saddened to learn of the passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada.  At 96 years old, and celebrating her Platinum Jubilee marking 70 years of service this year, Queen Elizabeth II was Britain’s and Canada’s longest-reigning Sovereign and the world’s oldest monarch.

Queen Elizabeth devoted her life to the service of the Commonwealth and its people. Her Majesty’s reign spanned seven decades, longer than most of us currently living, and throughout that time developed a special relationship with Canada and Canadians. The City of Kitchener has had the honour of hosting Queen Elizabeth II on a number of occasions.  On July 3, 1959, the Queen visited Kitchener for the first time as part of a 45-day Royal Tour of Canada, followed by a visit on June 28, 1973. Most recently the Queen visited our region in 2010.

On behalf of the Council and citizens of the City of Kitchener, we offer our heartfelt condolences on the passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, and we extend our thoughts and prayers to the Royal Family during this difficult time.  Our community mourns with you, and celebrate the life of service that was lived by Queen Elizabeth II.

The City of Kitchener will be lowering all flags to half-mast at city facilities during the official mourning period, and will provide details tomorrow of an official book of condolences for Kitchener residents and others to sign at Kitchener City Hall throughout the official mourning period.
