Earlier today, the Province of Ontario announced a provincewide shutdown that will take effect Sat., Dec. 26, at 12:01 a.m. This provincewide shutdown sets stronger restrictions and closures to stop the spread of COVID-19. The impacts of these time-limited measures will be evaluated throughout the 14-day shutdown in Northern Ontario and 28-day shutdown in Southern Ontario to determine if it is safe to lift any restrictions or if they need to be extended.

For Kitchener residents, this means:

  • No indoor gatherings will be permitted with people outside of your household. If you live alone, you may gather with one other household.
  • Outdoor gatherings will be limited to 10 people with physical distancing.

City services and facilities

  • City facilities including Kitchener City Hall, community centres, pools, and arenas will be closed to the public (with some exceptions for essential social and mental health services such as food distribution programs, warming centres, etc.).
  • Kitchener Public Library branches will be closed but will continue to offer curbside holds pick-up.
  • All City rentals will be paused.
  • Select City facilities will remain open for essential services with strict measures and restrictions in place:
    • The lower market hall and produce area at the Kitchener Market will remain open on Saturdays from 7 am. – 2 p.m. The food hall will be closed until further notice.
    • All City parks, playgrounds, designated off-leash dog parks and outdoor amenities remain open.
    • Cemeteries remain open providing limited services with physical distancing measures and 10 people indoors and outdoors. The Williamsburg Dedication Centre will be closed to the general public but open by appointment only.

Community rentals for weddings, funerals and religious services and ceremonies are limited to 10 people indoors and outdoors with physical distancing measures. The Kitchener City Hall wedding chapel will remain closed until further notice.
