The third annual Pride Ride cycled through Kitchener this past weekend, showcasing the city's growing cycling infrastructure to an enthusiastic crowd of riders. The event, hosted by the City of Kitchener, Spectrum, Camino Wellbeing + Mental Health and OK2BME, provided a celebratory opportunity to explore new protected bike lanes, separated cycle tracks and multi-use trails that have opened over the past year.

Ride organizers led participants on a route winding through Downtown Kitchener’s cycling grid on Joseph, Water, and Ontario streets. Since the protected lanes opened, these areas have seen bike ridership soar by 218 per cent. The Highland Rd cycle tracks offered another highlight, giving riders a taste of Kitchener's most complete street to date, with wide sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, and fully separated cycling facilities.

The lively Pride Ride was just one of over a dozen bike-related events planned across Kitchener this summer, aiming to celebrate and encourage cycling in the community. Most notably, residents can bike to these upcoming festivals and leave their bikes with Kitchener’s free bike check service – like a coat check, but for your bike!

  • Kitchener-Waterloo Multicultural Festival: June 22-23
  • Canada Day: July 1
  • Cruising on King: July 12
  • Downtown Kitchener Ribfest & Craft Beer Show: July 19-22
